The Children in Red Crag Village

When Rong Weimin was only a few months old, he came to live with his parents in the Eight Route Army Office in Red Crag Village, Chongqing. He was lively and bright, and he was everyone’s joy. And Zhou Enlai joked that Rong Weimin was an optimist, and called Weimin as “small optimist”, Deng Yingchao as “big optimist”, and himself as “super optimist”.

There were many more children like Rong Weimin, who lived together with their own parents in the tube-shaped apartment of the Eight Route Army Office. In this building, in addition to the staff, leaders such as Zhou Enlai, Dong Biwu, and Deng Yingchao also lived. And the room was both an office and a dormitory. Everyone’s job was very stressful. Therefore, when the cries of these children affected the work, their parents were so anxious that they hit children, distressed and upset.

In order to solve comrades’ worries, Deng Yingchao suggested that they gather these children and set up a childcare group, with the mothers taking turns to look after the children. Later, with more and more children in the group, the Office started up a nursery in a few bungalows three or four hundred meters away from the building, and arranged full-time staff to come to work.

Although the nursery was set up, there was no fixed funding, and thus children often cried for lack of toys. Then, Zhou Enlai said, “Don't worry, we all have a pair of hard-working hands and can make toys by ourselves.” He and Deng Yingchao mobilized other comrades to make toys together. Before long, pistols, submachine guns, large and small trucks, shuttlecocks, and various stacks of paper and other toys became available.

There were more than 30 children in the nursery in Red Crag Village, and each of them had a nickname. Except “small optimist”, there were also “small train”, “small optimistic girl”, “small plane”, “egg”, “light bulb” and so on.
